Mel
was born in Bill Collins and Karen Dzendolet’s
kitchen on January 26, 1996. That’s not so unusual,
as puppies are born every day. But his mom Hazel was
an ex-racing greyhound. They don’t give birth
in too many kitchens. And that was just the beginning
of Mel’s unusual life.
People would often ask if Mel was different from other
greyhounds because he never saw a track. Yes he was different.
From the way he put his pointy snout into other people jacket
pockets in his search for treats, to the way he’d
fly up AND down the stairs. He didn’t want to just
sleep on the bed. He wanted to sleep under the covers.
Unlike
most ex-racers, he loved to chase kong toys at the beach.
And he wouldn’t take a corner of the sofa when the
whole couch would be available.
While many ex-racers acquire one or two of these traits
along the way, Mel had them all, and many more. We were
all fortunate. He had the chance to have a real puppyhood,
to be a real dog, and he grabbed at both.
Mel was a very special client who was profiled last
April in our newsletter.
We will all miss him very much, but were lucky to have known
this sweet, silly, gentle soul.
We hope only to reciprocate some of the love and unselfishness
that our four legged friends give so freely.
