December 2005 Issue

The snow is falling as I write this month’s newsletter. Winter has arrived! Hard to believe how quickly time goes by as the seasons change here in New England.

It’s a good time of year to refresh some of the hazards that come around this time of year.

Winter Hazards for Pets

Be careful in the snow walking your dog. Wipe off salt and sand from paws.

Keep dangerous Christmas decorations away from pets. These include, but are not limited to tinsel, garland, breakable ornaments, poinsettia and mistletoe.

Make sure pets do not get into holiday chocolates! These can cause hyperactivity and even some heart issues for pets from the stimulant effects of the chocolate.

Stay away from green snow or any green puddles, as this is antifreeze that can be fatal. It has a sweet taste so easily ingested by animals if given the chance. Check your car radiator periodically.

Mosquitoes (carriers of heartworm disease) have almost disappeared by now but our dogs are still at risk for gastrointestinal parasites. These hardy worms can live even in sub zero temperatures. Keep your dog on the year round parasite control Interceptor.

Ticks are still present in this area but are much less “interactive” with our pets due to decreased ground foliage and snow cover. Depending on your dog’s activities and exposure, you may need to continue the K9Advantix to maintain tick control.

Holiday Hours

We will be closed Friday December 23rd until Monday December 26th when we open at 8am. We will be closed Saturday December 31st and open Monday January 2nd at 8am.

The emergency hospitals will be open 24 hours a day as usual. We refer to:

  • Essex County Veterinary Emergency Hospital of North Andover 978-725-5544
  • MA Veterinary Referral Hospital of Woburn 781-932-5802.

We wish everyone
a very healthy and happy
Christmas, Hanukkah and New Year!

Massage Therapy and Reiki Treatments

Cattie Coyle, our massage therapist of Nimble Limbs Massage is also available for Reiki treatments. This cold weather is a good time to think about a nice massage for your dog or cat if they are not able to exercise as much due to weather conditions!
