Happy Autumn! Hard to believe how quickly the time has passed. I am happy to be back at work and I am keeping very busy with Mia at home.

There has been a lot of activity at the clinic with Dr Ricketts’ wedding and Sue the receptionist’s wedding too! Several clients are expecting their first child so it is nice to be able to share even more than just the relationship with their pets.

Beverly Dog Ban Attempts

The recent issue of the attempt to ban dogs from Beverly’ Lynch and Ober Parks has been positive in that the Beverly Animal Resource Coalition (BARC) has been formed. The group’s goal is to keep ALL the parks of Beverly open to dogs by promoting responsible dog ownership and education.

It has been good to see so many clients participating in discussions and meetings. I encourage everyone to check out the website at www.beverlybarc.com and sign up.

Although the ban has been "tabled" for a few months, it is important to keep the interest up. The dog owners of Beverly and surrounding towns need to continue to show what an asset the dogs and their owners are to their communities.

One of the concerns of the Parks and Recreation Department had to do with transmission of parasites to people. Fortunately, there is minimal concern for our children on this issue. Yes, there are parasites that can be transmitted from animals to people but the risk is very low and simple hygiene such as washing hands after play and before eating greatly reduces these risks. For the dogs that are on heartworm preventative, there is protection against other intestinal parasites in the monthly chewable tablet.

In my ten years of practice, I have no knowledge of any case of a child becoming ill or having parasites from the family cat or dog. To those of us fortunate enough to have animals in our lives, the benefits of having a community with responsible pet owners and their dogs clearly outweigh the risks.
