The Whole Pet
News and Tips from Beverly Animal Natural Health Center
The summer went by with a swoosh! Time sure flies these days between busy days at the clinic and busy days off with the kids. Dr Ricketts and I are very grateful to have the best of both worlds. Thanks to you, our clients.
Both of us were able to attend some great continuing education recently. I attended the World Feline Veterinary Conference in Boston and Dr Ricketts traveled to Maine for the New England Veterinary Conference. These meetings are always a great time to recharge our brains with new information as well as to meet up with colleagues and share day to day experiences. The staff will also be attending some more continuing education in November.
In this newsletter, I just wanted to update clients on some tips and info that we think is always worth hearing about.
Please be sure to give your dog monthly Interceptor year round! Immiticide, the drug used to treat dogs that have become infected with heartworm is currently not being produced in the USA due to FDA and drug company issues. We are able to get it from Europe but on a very limited basis. Keep your dog protected against this deadly disease.

Crating is something that we strongly recommend for all of our canine patients. It is not just for puppies. MOST dogs love their crate and it is not unreasonable to keep a crate available until the dog is over TWO years of age. Use your crate responsibly!
Supplements can make a huge difference to maintain mobility and strength in both our cat and dog patients. We recommend the Nutramaxx line. Makes a difference! Don't forget about exercise despite dropping temperatutes.
Lilies are TOXIC to cats! Please make sure that your cats never have access to any lily flowers. The pollen as well as the flower itself causes kidney failure and if not treated immediately, can be fatal.
Do not use ANY mice or rat poisons (rodenticides) if you have pets in your home. It only takes a minute for the dog or cat to get to an area where they usually don't go to gain access to this deadly product.
Fleas are quite common these days. They are trying to find a nice warm shelter for the winter. Make sure to treat all pets in the household at the same time. Not all react to fleas so you may have just one very itchy pet and one that is not. We recommend K9Advantix II for dogs and Advantage II for cats. If you have any questions about flea treatment, please call us!
